The differences between ribbons and thermal ribbons
Thermal ribbons are specialized consumables for barcode printers. They are coated with a layer of carbon powder. During printing, the print head heats up, causing the carbon powder to transfer onto adhesive labels—this process is called thermal transfer.
Ribbons, on the other hand, are common consumables for general-purpose printers, such as dot matrix printers. Ribbons used in dot matrix printers are made of fabric.
